Some tentative outcomes of the meeting included the development of a Coordination Group that would be comprised of delegates from both Vietnam and Loas. The Coordination Group would be created to continue work on the Transboundary Cooperation for biodiversity conservation and research between the two bordering national parks,PhongNha -Ke Bang in Vietnam and the Him Nam No in Laos.
This workshop, the second of this nature with the previous being held in 1998, continued the endeavours of both parties to share knowledge and information and establish a framework for this collaboration. However, the question of resourcing was a key inhibitor to what might eventuate from the tentative Transboundary Agreement. The final outcome of the agreement will need to be made with authorisation from the QuangBinh and Khammouane provincial governments.
A central discussion point of the meeting was that of coordinated scientific research. Both parks expressed a desire forresearch coordination and information exchange, particularly in relation to species that appear on both sides of the border. In order to achieve such cooperation it wasestablished that there is a need for transboundary capacity building, including training exchanges to share technical knowledge, particularly around animal rescue.
Another key point of discussion was the need for stronger cooperation on border law enforcement. This centered particularly around the issues of illegal logging and poaching. A need for conservation outreach was expressed, in order to support law enforcement, by raising awareness about prohibitions and illegal activity amongst people residing within the protected areas and the buffer zones.
The meeting offered a rare opportunity for the neighbouring National Parks to exchange ideas, challenges, culture, and friendship. Most importantly is showed that work will continue across the border to protect these world-class biodiversity rich environments, and the hope for Transboundary conservation will prevail.
